Warrant Of Fitness (WOFs)

A Warrant of Fitness (WOF) inspection helps ensure your vehicle meets New Zealand road safety standards and is safe to drive.

At DriveSmart Automotive, we provide thorough WOF inspections from our Frankton workshop and can explain any issues clearly if repairs are required before your vehicle passes.

What does a Warrant of Fitness inspection cover?

The inspection is a general safety check. The aspects checked are set out in the NZTA vehicle inspection requirements manual (VIRM) and include the following:

- Tyre condition & tread depth
- Brake operation and performance
- Structural condition eg: Rust
- Light functionality
- Chips/cracks in the windscreen
- Windscreen washers and wipers
- Doors (are they functioning correctly)
- Safety belts (must not be damaged or overly faded; buckles must work properly)
- Airbags (if fitted)
- Speedometer (must be working)
- Steering and suspension (must be safe and secure)
- Exhaust (checking for leaks or excess smoke/noise)
- Fuel system (checking for leaks)
- If you’ve modified your car, motorcycle, van or other light vehicle, you may need a low volume vehicle certificate (mod cert)

What a Warrant of Fitness doesn’t cover

A WoF doesn’t dig deep into your vehicle’s condition. Eg: it doesn’t check items such as the engine, clutch, gearbox and differential condition, oil/lubricant levels, brake pad thickness or life expectancy (unless they are visibly below safe limits), paintwork condition or checking for rust in non-structural areas.

Fill with new engine oil
Replace sump plug washer
Inspect engine for oil leaks
Air filter cleaned or replaced
Brake master cylinder fluid levels and test condition
Power steer fluid level (if applicable)
Manual or Automatic transmission oil, Diff oil level (if applicable)
Engine drive belts, tension and condition. Adjust if required (excludes cambelt)
Battery level and terminals – Test battery condition – Battery security
Check alternator charging
Windscreen washer bottle fluid
Lube door hinge
Engine coolant levels and test condition
Visual inspection of cooling system, check hoses and clamps
Check radiator cap condition
Visual inspection of water pump
Check suspension secure and leaks
Check steering joints for play
Check wheel bearings
Check hand brake operation and adjust
Visual inspection of brakes
Inspect CV boots (if applicable)
Grease all grease nipples (if applicable)
Visual inspection of exhaust for condition & security
Check , adjust and set tyre pressures
Check tyres for uneven wear, damage & tread depth
General visual inspection of suspension and steering
Lights checked
Wipers checked
The vehicle is driven and the performance of the brakes, engine and suspension is checked.

Note:
No mechanical parts will be removed for inspection unless otherwise stated. The above list may vary depending on vehicle make and model.

Other things to be done at services (optional):
– Engine flush of old engine oil
– Fuel filter replacement
– Automatic Transmission oil change
– Manual gearbox and diff oil change
– Power steer oil flush and change
